Richard Box

Richard was born in Brighton in 1943.

He studied painting and lithography at Hastings School of Art ( 1960 - 1962 ) and at Goldsmiths' School of Art ( 1962 - 1964 ). He was awarded the N.D.D. He remained at Goldsmiths' for the Art Teachers' certificate course ( 1964 - 1965 ). He was awarded the A.T.C. It was in that year and on that course that he made the significant discovery of embroidery under the aegis of Constance Howard. Later on, between the years of 1975 and 1979, he studied, as a part time student, the History of Art course ( Dip. Hist . Art . ) and also, as a part time student, between the years of 1984 and 1985, he studied the Advanced Diploma in Education ( Adv. Dip. Ed. ). Both ' extra mural courses ' run by London University.
Richard Box
He taught general art at Eltham Green Comprehensive school ( 1965 - 1968 ) ... Thence to Avery Hill College of Educational as Lecturer in Art ( 1968 ) .... progressing to ' Senior Lecturer '
and finally ' Head of Art ' until 1985 when he resigned from the position in order to develop his own work, to escape from the ever increasing and stressful bureaucracy of that position and to give more time to teaching design and embroidery to the ever increasing requests from branches of the Embroiderers' Guild almost every other weekend !

From the moment he left Goldmiths' and started teaching he continued to develop his work in drawing, painting and embroidery. He exhibits his work regularly which hang in several public and many private collections in this country and abroad.

He is a regular exhibitor and demonstrator at the Knitting and Stitching shows and other craft
fairs. He gives talks to textile groups; particularly to branches of the Embroiderers' Guild throughout the country. He runs courses in drawing, painting and his particular system of textile
art which combines fabric collage with both machine and hand embroidery. He teaches these
at various adult education centres as well as independent organisations.

Wearing another ' hat ' altogether he lectures in the history of art to N.A.D.F.A.S. ( The National Association of Decorative and Fine Art Society ).

He has written seven books and made two D.V.D.'s about drawing, design, colour and embroidery. Some are still in print and available one way or another.

Although well past the ' official ' retirement age, Richard aims to continue to develop his art work as long as he is physically and mentally capable. Furthermore, he aims to continue lecturing and teaching so long as he behaves himself and is still invited.
